What a residence permit is and who can get one

A temporary residence permit (TRP) gives a foreigner the right to live in Ukraine legally for more than 90 days on the basis of work, study, marriage, business or family reunification. It is usually issued for 1 year, and for some grounds up to 3 years, and can be renewed an unlimited number of times. We arrange the permit end to end in Kyiv and across Ukraine: from checking your ground to the plastic card in hand and residence registration.

Who can get a residence permit

  • Foreigners with a legal ground: work permit, study, marriage, family, etc.
  • Citizens of visa countries — after entering on a type D visa
  • People with a valid passport and no entry ban to Ukraine

Which documents you need

  • Passport (for citizens of visa countries — a travel document with a type D visa)
  • Notarized translation of the passport into Ukrainian
  • Health insurance policy valid in Ukraine for the whole term of the permit
  • Documents depending on your ground

What a residence permit gives you

  • Cross the border freely and live in Ukraine legally for the whole validity of the permit
  • Register as a sole trader and run a business legally in Ukraine
  • Get a residence permit for your family members and move your family
  • Open accounts with Ukrainian banks
  • Enrol in state and private educational institutions
  • Get a driving licence and import your own car without duties or taxes
  • Travel abroad without risk: even a long absence does not annul the permit

A case from practice

Case: a permit for a US citizen when the insurance «didn't outlive» the term
Situation

An employer filed for an employee's permit on their own. The insurance policy was issued for exactly 1 year. While the Migration Service reviewed the application, the future permit's dates shifted — and the policy no longer covered its whole term.

What we did

We re-issued the policy with a margin for the permit's actual validity, fixed the package and refiled.

Result

The permit was issued with no second refusal. We now always build a margin into the policy term — a typical mistake of DIY filings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate type D visa?+

Citizens of visa countries do: the permit is issued on the basis of a long-term D visa. We check this at the consultation and handle both stages if needed.

Is personal presence required?+

Yes, the foreigner submits biometric data at the Migration Service in person. We take care of the rest (application, translation, booking), so the visit is single and short.

How long does the permit take?+

Producing the card at the Migration Service usually takes 15 working days after the full package is filed. The overall term depends on your ground and whether a type D visa is needed; we quote exact terms at the consultation.

What is included in the turnkey price?+

The lawyer's work, the notarized passport translation, the state fee and admin charges, health insurance and support at the Migration Service are already in the price fixed in the contract. No hidden fees.

What if the Migration Service refuses?+

We check the grounds before filing and take on only cases with a real chance. If a refusal happens, we analyze the decision and help remove the cause or appeal it.

Do I need to know Ukrainian?+

No. We handle all Ukrainian-language forms and all communication with the Migration Service. We talk to you in English, Ukrainian or Russian, whichever suits you.

Can I start while my visa or stay hasn't expired yet?+

Yes, and the earlier the better. If the deadline is close, mention it in your first message: we'll start the case without a time crunch and keep you from overstaying.

Do you work with companies that sponsor an employee?+

Yes. We arrange permits and work permits for employers, issue invoices and accounting documents, and can run several employees at once.

Can I file while abroad?+

The application is filed in Ukraine. If you are from a visa country, a type D visa is issued first at a consulate, and after entering on it the permit documents are filed. We run both stages.

For how long is the permit issued?+

Usually for 1 year, and for some grounds up to 3 years. The permit can be renewed an unlimited number of times while the ground lasts. We confirm the exact term for your case at the consultation.

Can the case be handled by power of attorney?+

Yes. Preparing and filing documents, communicating with the Migration Service and collecting the card are done under a power of attorney. You only need one short visit in person to submit biometrics.

Can I travel abroad with the permit?+

Yes, and without risk: unlike many countries, the Ukrainian permit is not annulled even after a long absence. You cross the border freely for its whole validity.

Can I work in Ukraine with the permit?+

A work-based permit lets you work. For other grounds a work permit must first be obtained by the employer. We'll advise how to arrange it.

How can I check the status of my permit?+

Via the 'Document status check' service on the Migration Service site (dmsu.gov.ua). You can check the day after filing. We also track the status and keep you posted.

When must I register my place of residence?+

Within 30 days of receiving the permit. It is a mandatory condition for lawful residence; a delay risks a fine. We handle the registration right after the card is issued.
