Why does the Migration Service want your insurance?
The state logic is simple: a foreigner living in the country for a year should not be left without medical care for lack of funds. That is why a health insurance contract is explicitly on the document list for the permit.
In practice the officer checks three things: the policy period, the coverage territory and your name. A mistake in any one of them means the package comes back.
Three requirements for the policy
- 1Period: the policy must cover at least the whole period you are requesting the permit for. For a one-year permit that is a 12-month contract.
- 2Territory: valid across Ukraine. A travel policy for a trip does not qualify.
- 3Details: your name in Latin letters exactly as in the passport. Even a one-letter mismatch creates a problem.
Where to get it and what to watch
Policies are sold by Ukrainian insurance companies, the paperwork usually takes under a day and can be done online. The price depends on the insured amount, your age and the period, so quoting a specific number here would be dishonest: compare a few offers.
In my practice the most convenient moment to buy the policy is after your filing date is set: the coverage will then match the future permit period exactly and you will not pay for extra months.

Frequently asked questions
Will an international policy from my country work?+
Formally the law requires a policy valid in Ukraine. Offices accept foreign policies reluctantly and not always: a Ukrainian insurance contract is the safer option.
Do I need the policy for the renewal too?+
Yes. The renewal uses the same basic package, including a valid policy for the new period.
What if the policy expires before the permit does?+
It does not affect the permit already issued, but you will need a new policy for the renewal. We recommend renewing both together every year.
