How to renew a temporary residence permit?

Short answer

The temporary residence permit is renewed yearly through the local Migration Service office. Documents can be filed no earlier than 4 months and no later than 15 working days before the permit expires. The package mirrors the initial application, plus the current permit card. The key condition: your ground of residence (work, study, family) must still be valid.

When should you file for renewal?

The law defines a filing window: no earlier than 4 months and no later than 15 working days before the permit expires. Fifteen working days is roughly three calendar weeks, and that is exactly the deadline people miss most often.

In my practice the sweet spot is filing 30-40 days before expiry: it leaves a buffer for unexpected officer requests or a missing certificate.

What goes into the renewal package?

The package almost mirrors the first application: passport with translation, an updated supporting document (a valid work permit, a fresh university certificate and so on), insurance for the new period, proof of residence, the fee receipt and the current permit card itself.

Watch the date synchronization: the new permit cannot outlast your ground. If your work permit expires in 6 months, the residence permit will only be extended to that date.

What if the deadline is almost gone?

If fewer than 15 working days remain, the standard renewal route is closed. Options depend on the situation: sometimes filing with an explanation of valid reasons works, sometimes you have to leave and start over with a type D visa.

The worst scenario is waiting until the permit expires and staying. That is illegal stay with a fine and a risk of an entry ban. If you are in that risk zone, contact a lawyer immediately while the permit is still alive.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave Ukraine while the renewal is pending?+

Formally yes, but I do not recommend it: if the old permit expires while you are abroad, returning becomes a problem. Plan trips after receiving the new card.

How many times can the permit be renewed?+

The law does not limit renewals as long as the ground exists. After several years of continuous residence on certain grounds you can consider permanent residence.

What if I changed employers?+

The permit is tied to the ground. A new employer means a new work permit and a re-issued residence permit, not a simple renewal. Do not delay: a gap in the ground creates a cancellation risk.
