Type C or type D visa: which Ukrainian visa do you need?

OHOleksandra HordiienkoMigration lawyer6 min read
Type C
up to 90 days
Type D
long-term, 90+
Path to the permit
only via D
Short answer

The type C visa is a short-term visa for stays up to 90 days within 180: tourism, visits, business trips. The type D visa is a long-term visa for those coming to live: it grants entry and the right to apply for a temporary residence permit. The simple rule: if you plan to stay beyond 90 days or to work, you need type D.

What is the fundamental difference?

The visa type reflects your intention, not just the trip length. A type C visa tells the state: I will come and leave. A type D visa says: I am coming to live, so let me apply for a residence permit.

Hence the mistake we see every month: a person arrives on a type C visa or visa-free, finds a job and hopes to 'switch' to a residence permit from inside the country. For most cases it does not work that way: the permit requires a type D visa obtained at a consulate abroad.

When do you specifically need type D?

  • Employment: your employer has already obtained your work permit
  • Study: you are enrolled at a Ukrainian educational institution
  • Family: reunification with a Ukrainian citizen or a permit holder
  • Business, religious or volunteer activity with the respective documents

How is each visa obtained?

Type C: through a consulate or, for citizens of the listed countries, online via e-Visa. You need proof of purpose, funds and a return route.

Type D: only through a Ukrainian consulate abroad. The key document is proof of your ground (work permit, university invitation, family documents). After entering on a type D visa you have 90 days to file for the residence permit.

Frequently asked questions

I am from a visa-free country. Do I need a type D visa at all?+

Not for entry. And for the residence permit most visa-free citizens do not need a type D visa either: they file while staying in Ukraine legally. That is the main visa-free advantage for those planning to stay.

Can I change a type C visa to type D without leaving Ukraine?+

No, the type D visa is issued at a consulate abroad. The practical route: prepare your ground in Ukraine, travel to the nearest consulate, get the D visa and come back.

How long is the type D visa valid?+

The type D visa is issued as a multiple-entry visa and serves you for entry and the permit application period. Once you receive the permit, it is the permit, not the visa, that is your residence and border document.
