Comparison
TRP or PRP: the difference and which to choose
Updated
Short answer
A TRP (temporary residence permit) is issued for as long as your ground is valid, usually one year, and renewed yearly. A PRP (permanent residence) is indefinite and needs no separate work permit. Most foreigners start with a TRP and move to a PRP later, once they qualify for an immigration permit.
| Criterion | TRP (temporary) | PRP (permanent) |
|---|---|---|
| Validity | 1-2 years, while the ground lasts | indefinite, card swap every 10 years |
| Right to work | permit required (exemptions exist) | no separate permit |
| Ground | work, study, marriage, business | immigration permit: quota, investment, family |
| Living abroad | limited | free |
| Renewal | yearly | not needed |
| Next step | move to a PRP | citizenship |
Frequently asked questions
Can I apply for a PRP directly, skipping the TRP?+
Yes, if you qualify for an immigration permit (for example marriage to a Ukrainian citizen, origin or investment). Then no TRP is needed. Otherwise you get a TRP first.
How long from a TRP to a PRP?+
It depends on the ground. Some categories must live in Ukraine for a few years on a TRP; others qualify for an immigration permit right away, outside the quota.
